About the Guzheng

Everything you need to know before buying your first Guzheng.

History & Origins

The Guzheng (古筝), also known as the Chinese zither, is one of the oldest and most revered instruments in Chinese culture. With a history spanning over 2,500 years, it has been a central part of Chinese classical music, court music, and folk traditions throughout the dynasties.

The instrument evolved from an earlier form called the "se" and gradually developed into the 21-string instrument we know today. It is played across China and has gained a growing following in Europe, Japan, Korea, and beyond.

How It Is Played

The Guzheng is played by plucking the strings with the right hand using finger picks (义甲, yìjiǎ) worn on the fingertips, while the left hand presses the strings to the left of the bridges to create vibrato, bends, and ornamental notes.

This combination of techniques allows the Guzheng to produce an extraordinarily expressive range of sounds - from gentle, flowing arpeggios to powerful, percussive strokes. It is capable of imitating the sound of flowing water, wind, birds, and even the human voice.

Is It Hard to Learn?

The Guzheng is considered one of the more accessible traditional Chinese instruments for beginners. Basic melodies can be learned within a few weeks, while mastery of advanced techniques takes years of dedicated practice. With proper guidance, players of all ages can enjoy making music on the Guzheng.
